Microblading is a very precise process that uses an effective tool that works as a pen with a sloped blade and between 9 and 14 tiny needles at the tip. If needles make you cringe, don’t worry because they don’t actually penetrate the skin but simply scratch the skin surface delicately just like a paper cut would. The work of the needle is to implant fine featherweight strokes and medical grade pigment on the outer layer or epidermis of the skin. The end result is semi-permanent natural-looking hair strokes on your eyebrow.
You may be asking how long the beautifully crafted eyebrows will last. The fine results of microblading take anywhere from 6 to 18 months to start fading. However, keep in mind that the longevity of the pigment will depend on your skin type. If you have oily skin, microblading will last for around 6 months before you need a top-up. If you have normal skin, your microblading may last for as long as 18 months before you go back for a top-up.
Microblading eyebrows will eventually fade away if you don’t get a top-up after 12 months. The good thing about the procedure is that it doesn’t leave scarring or discolouration. The pigments used are safe and simply fade away without leaving behind any signs of microblading after 18 months.
How Different is Microblading From Brow Tattoos?
Microblading is different from getting your brows tattooed because while Permanent Makeup works deeper in the skin with a machine and different needles permanent makeup gives different looks that work with different skin types and can last up to 2 years. Microblading only lasts for around 6 to 18 months before the pigments fade away depending on your skin type.
Another major difference between microblading and the kind of brow work you’d get from a tattoo artist is the fact that microblading creates more natural looking and finer strokes than any results you can get from a brow tattoo job.
Furthermore, a tattoo artist uses an electrical gadget that penetrates the skin while a microblading professional uses a handheld needle to apply the pigment on the epidermis. With microblading you’ll only experience a scratching feeling rather than the usual buzz of a tattoo gun as it pierces your skin.
Does It Hurt or Cause Allergic Reactions?
Microblading doesn’t hurt at all besides simple sensation that you’ll feel as the pigment is applied. It is not a painful process because of the numbing ointment applied before the procedure starts. Most people, however, find the small scratching sound of the blade a bit uncomfortable. But fortunately, the whole process is quite fast and normally takes less than an hour.
Allergic reactions to microblading are quite rare. They can only happen to someone who is allergic or sensitive to pigments. We are yet to meet one. Just to be safe, the microblading specialist will always perform a scratch test before the treatment to ensure that you are not allergic to the pigments.
What Happens During the Microblading Procedure?
The microblading procedure follows these simple but intricate steps:
- The first step involves prepping and shaping the brow area. This is done by threading or waxing the hairs and cleaning up the brow prior to the appointment when skin tests are being performed in preparation for the main microblading treatment.
- The next step is numbing the brow area topically using a numbing ointment. The process takes around 20 minutes during which the client discusses with the specialist about the best shade and shape they desire to have.
- The specialist also uses this time to measure the brow area while considering the shape and symmetry of the client’s face as well as other facial features.
- When the brows are numb, the specialist begins the needling process which involves implanting the pigment using featherweight strokes to create superficial lines in the skin where the pigment settles in.
- A final layer of the pigment is added and the area is cleaned to reveal beautiful eyebrows.
The client will be required to come back for a top-up session after six to eight weeks. The top-up session is used to fill up any gaps left in sections where the pigment didn’t settle in properly. The specialist will also assess the work and add further strokes or dark pigmentation where necessary.
Can Microblading Be Removed?
As stated, microblading does not cause any scarring or permanent discolouration and can therefore be removed using a salt or saline solution.
Keep in mind that your brows will be around 40% darker in the first 7 to 10 days. You may also see scabs forming and flake off but this should not be a cause for worry. It is just the healing process.
